The London is Blue podcast’s take on last night’s game noted that Wesley Fofana, starting his first game since we faced Lincoln in the cup a month ago, got the assist for Marc Guiu’s opening goal when he headed a set piece routine back across goal.
It was part of Chelsea’s wider improvement in these situations as the Premier League arms race for set pieces continues.
Fofana back in the picture with assist
“Interesting that Wesley Fofana ended up being the guy on the assist for that goal,” presenter Dan Dormer pointed out.
“So that was his day, the way that that dead ball situation worked together really, really well. Our dead ball play, our set piece play, gets spoke about enough but could use some deeper examination, just on how that’s really transformed the danger and threat that this team can present.”
Fofana looked like he wanted to come off in the second half due to cramp as he gets more match minutes in his legs, but he stayed on, hopefully helping him build strength and fitness for games to come. We don’t expect him to start this weekend, but if he starts next midweek against Wolves, he should be ready to start Premier League games after that.
