Unai Emery needs to sort out the mess at Aston Villa sooner rather than later after losing 2-1 to Goa Ahead Eagles in the Europa League.
De Adelaarshorst hosted Villa on 23 October, and the visitors had a perfect start as Evann Guessand found the back of the net in the fourth minute.
Emi Buendia let Emery down by missing from the penalty spot in the 79th minute to get the Villans back into the game, leaving the hosts celebrating at full-time.
The Dutch outfit were the underdogs going into the game, sitting 12th in the Eredivisie, but they gave the Lions a run for their money.
Go Ahead Eagles revenue dwarfs Aston Villa
Go Ahead Eagles had a revenue of just £18.1million last season, according to the Daily Mail.
The news outlet reported in its print edition on 24 October, on page 74, that Villa’s starting eleven against the Dutch outfit had a total value of more than £250m in fees, excluding loan fees and Jadon Sancho’s wage coverage.
While the financial gulf was evident for most of the first half, Mathis Suray’s goal from a set-piece in the 42nd minute came as a bitter blow to the Villans.
The Lions couldn’t seem to recover, and despite creating opportunities, it was the hosts who scored once again after a simple long ball caught out Emery’s defence, leading to Mats Deijl’s strike at around the hour mark.

Sancho was arguably one of the best players for Villa, but the Manchester United loanee was taken off early despite making an impact against Go Ahead Eagles.
The travelling Villa Park faithful saw their team have the majority of possession and create the better chances, yet the Lions failed to secure any points at De Adelaarshorst.
Unai Emery will be scratching his head after Go Ahead Eagles loss
Emery must take lessons from the loss to Go Ahead Eagles, but the Spanish manager will wonder how his team lost.
With the likes of Ollie Watkins and Buendia scuffing their lines, the former Sevilla head coach will feel his team did enough to win the game, but in the end, it wasn’t enough for Villa.
| Go Ahead Eagles | Statistics | Aston Villa |
| 30% | Possession | 70% |
| 0.83 | xG | 2.82 |
| 2 | Big chances | 6 |
| 5 | Total shots | 18 |
| 6 | Goalkeeper saves | 1 |
The Lions have had a poor start to the season, and it can arguably be traced back to the lack of reinforcements in the summer.
However, considering the financial gap between the Dutch outfit and the Villans, which is now an embarrassment, the Villa Park faithful won’t want to see any excuses from Emery about the strength of his squad.
