Paul Merson has urged Enzo Maresca to drop Jamie Gittens for Saturday’s Premier League game against Sunderland.
Having thrashed Ajax in midweek the Blues will aim to make it five wins in a row in all competitions when they welcome the Black Cats to Stamford Bridge.
Sunderland have made an impressive start to the season and are surprisingly level on points with Chelsea after eight games.
Paul Merson urges Enzo Maresca to drop Jamie Gittens
Enzo Maresca made ten changes for the Ajax game, and had the luxury of bringing off a number of key players early given the context of the match.
The Italian is likely to shuffle his pack once again, which will probably mean more changes in the wide areas, with Estevao and Gittens selected on Wednesday night.
Gittens was named man of the match against Ajax, in what was without a doubt his best performance in a Chelsea shirt given the difficult start to the season he’s had.
However, despite Gittens’ performance, Merson has urged Maresca to drop the winger for Saturday’s game with the Premier League new boys.
“Chelsea should start Estevao, Joao Pedro and Pedro Neto as their front-three against Sunderland,” he told Sportskeeda.
“Jamie Gittens had his best game in a Chelsea shirt against Ajax but I just think Neto should be first-choice down that flank.”
Estevao continues to impress
Competition for places in the wide areas is fierce and players have got to make the most of every opportunity they are given.
Given the amount of games this season there will be plenty of chances for the likes of Estevao, Pedro Neto, Gittens and Alejandro Garnacho.
Despite only being 18 years old, Estevao is making it very difficult for Maresca not to pick him, and the youngster is looking like Chelsea’s most dangerous winger.
Maresca will manage Estevao carefully, but it looks like the Brazil international is going to be a key player for Chelsea this campaign.
