“Ready to start” – Enzo Maresca gives huge team news clue about one player tomorrow

PL News Friday 24 October 2025 - 12:59

Just when injuries were starting to clear up and things were looking rosy at Chelsea, Enzo Maresca dropped a bit of a bomb today by revealing (without much prompting) that he had spoken to Marc Guiu behind the scenes about his efforts in training.

According to Maresca, the striker had rectified things, and was then handed a start on Wednesday night against Ajax. Chelsea were winning so comfortably (with Guiu having opened the scoring) that the striker was then taken off at half time.

Later in the press conference, the Italian coach was asked whether this early exit was because the forward was being rested ahead of potentially starting tomorrow as well. Maresca wouldn’t say if he was going to play, but did say Guiu was “ready to start” if called upon.

“Absolutely, yes.”

The team have looked better with Guiu playing ahead of Joao Pedro up top, and with Liam Delap soon to return, we reckon that could be the move Maresca goes for, as they prepare to integrate Delap back into that position.

However there are quite a few options available to the coach, so we’re not surprised he’s keeping his cards close to his chest.

In other news…

Enzo Maresca has his work cut out in terms of managing his squad, the players who don’t play as much as the ones who do play. He spoke a little about those hard decisions in the press conference today.

Tomorrow’s opposition are recently promoted but not to be underestimated. Enzo Maresca made it very clear he had a lot of respect for Sunderland, and also pointed out what he thought their strong points were.
