Mikel Arteta has revealed that Gabriel Magalhaes is a doubt for Sunday’s clash with Crystal Palace after picking up a problem in the 4–0 win over Atletico Madrid.
The Brazilian was substituted with 18 minutes remaining on Tuesday, shortly after assisting Viktor Gyokeres and having earlier broken the deadlock with a powerful header.
He was replaced by Cristhian Mosquera, who will likely partner William Saliba in the centre of defence. Riccardo Calafiori and loanee Piero Hincapie are other left-sided options.
In his Friday press conference, the manager provided this update: “Big Gabi had to leave the pitch with an issue, and he hasn’t been able to train yet.
“Let’s see how he evolves in the next 24 hours, whether he is available or not for the weekend.”
Elsewhere, Kai Havertz, Noni Madueke and Martin Odegaard are making progress with their respective recoveries from knee problems and are expected to return to action next month.
“They are progressing really well,” said Arteta. “They are starting to do certain activities. They are all super willing to be available as quickly as possible, but at the moment, none of them are in contention in the next week or so.”
Gabriel Jesus has begun training on the grass and is in the final stage of his recovery from January’s ACL surgery.
In interviews this week, the Brazilian said he’s “feeling great” but is wary of pushing himself too hard. In all likelihood, he’ll start to get minutes at the turn of the year.
