Enzo Maresca has admitted he was happy with Enzo Fernandez giving Estevao the penalty against Ajax as it highlighted the team’s togetherness.
Chelsea thrashed Ajax 5-1 on Wednesday evening, with Estevao becoming Chelsea’s youngest scorer in Champions League history.
The Blues also created history as they became the first club to have three teenagers score in the same Champions League game.
Enzo Maresca happy Fernandez gave Estevao the penalty
Estevao once again impressed against Ajax as he has done in the vast majority of his appearances this season, and pressure is now growing on Maresca to start him regularly.
Maresca has revealed he doesn’t find it difficult to tell Estevao he’s not playing, and having played 90 minutes against Ajax, there’s a chance he could find himself back on the bench against Sunderland.
Chelsea have now won their last four games in a row in all competitions and are looking to making it five on Saturday.
There seems to be a confidence and a belief amongst the team, which was highlighted after Fernandez handed Estevao the second penalty in midweek, something Maresca admitted he was happy about.
“It’s very, very good,” he told his pre-match press conference.
“I told the players after the game that for sure we were very happy about the winning, about the three points against Ajax, but the main thing about that game was Enzo.
“When he gave the ball to Estevao we got to show how is the team in this moment, how they are all together in terms of togetherness, in terms of effort and this is what we need if we want to try to do something important.”
Sunderland pose a real threat
Whilst Chelsea swatted aside Ajax, Sunderland will likely provide the Blues with a tougher test on Saturday, with both teams level on points after the first eight games.
Sunderland have made an impressive start to the season, and Maresca has highlighted the Black Cats have a number of strengths.
However, it’s a game Chelsea are expected to win, and dropped points would go down as a major disappointment.
