Enzo Maresca has described Marc Guiu as a typical number nine as he spoke about his development ahead of Saturday’s game with Sunderland.
The Blues welcome the Black Cats to Stamford Bridge, looking to make it five wins in a row in all competitions after thrashing Ajax on Wednesday night.
Sunderland have made a brilliant start back to life in the Premier League, and are actually level on points with Chelsea after the first eight games.
Enzo Maresca speaks on Marc Guiu development
Saturday’s game will see Guiu come up against Sunderland for the first time since his loan was cut short at the end of the transfer window.
Guiu initially joined Sunderland on a season loan, but was recalled after Liam Delap picked up a hamstring injury at the end of August.
The Spain under-21 international had to be patient, and didn’t get his first minutes of the season until the win against Liverpool earlier this month, but has now featured in the last three games.
Maresca confirmed Guiu hadn’t featured before because of what he’d been doing in training, but added he’s now ready to start games.
Guiu has been linked with a return to Sunderland in January, has impressed in the last few games, and looks a better player than he did last season, and Maresca has spoken on his development.
“Marc is a typical number nine, you will see physically strong, he is a box player.” he told his pre-match press conference.
“Again he is [born in] 06, he can improve and he can do many things better and we are working with him every day to help him and as I said many times, he is going to play games with us.”
Joao Pedro role to change
Pedro has struggled playing in the nine during the last few games, and often looked like a passenger, however he looked much better playing off Guiu in the second half against Forest.
The Brazil international has played both in the nine and ten, and Maresca believes he plays better with another nine next to him.
“Then in terms of Joao [Pedro], we know that he can play as a No.9 or he can play as a No.10, in both positions I think Joao is very good but probably when he has another No.9 next to him, he is playing better.”
