Chelsea are almost onto their next game – but you can be sure that Josh Acheampong is still thinking about last week.
The academy produced defender scored his first senior goal, and it was for his boyhood club. He opened the scoring, and Chelsea went on to win comfortably against Nottingham Forest.
Acheampong goal was predicted by staff member
“Scoring a Premier League goal is something I have dreamed of. As a defender, I don’t score many goals, so when I do, it’s always a really good feeling,” Acheampong said in quotes picked up the club’s official website.
“The cross from Pedro [Neto] was so perfect that I didn’t even have time to think about it! It literally just hit my head and then it was in the back of the net!”
As it turns out, the goal had been predicted by a staff member…
“We worked on set-pieces the day before and I actually scored a header. Bernardo [Cueva], the set-piece coach, was saying, ‘You’re going to score today’, so I kind of felt it and was just happy it came.
“As soon as I scored, Reece pushed me to the fans, but I just wanted to make sure that we got the win before I celebrated too much, to be honest. Winning made it more special.”
And of course, when he was back in the dressing room, his phone was lighting up with messages from well wishers:
“It was mad! Everyone was really supportive and really happy for me, so it was good!”
We don’t think Acheampong will start tomorrow – but he might do, and even if he doesn’t he’s never been closer to a first eleven place.
