Manchester United climbed into the top four of the Premier League following a 4-2 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday.
The Red Devils made it three wins on the bounce, and thereby ended a three-game losing streak against the Seagulls at Old Trafford.
Luke Shaw started on the left side of the back three as usual, but the Englishman was substituted in the 65th minute of the encounter.
There were suggestions that the defender had picked up a possible knock, but speaking after the game, manager Ruben Amorim revealed the real reason.
The Portuguese tactician said that Shaw ‘had a virus’ during the week, which contributed to his struggles against Brighton. He should be fine for the next game.
He told Manutd.com: “Luke Shaw is fine. He had a virus during the week. He struggled a little bit in the game, but he’s going to be ready for the next one.”
Shaw completed 89 percent of his passes yesterday, but won only two out of five duels contested.
His most notable moment was the good shielding job to deny Yankuba Minteh a shot on goal.
Shaw, described as ‘fast’ and ‘aggressive’ by Amorim during his post-match press conference, was not at his best, but should keep his place going forward.
Amorim obviously has a preference for a left-footed centre-back on the left side of the back three. Ayden Heaven was called up from the bench to replace Shaw.
Heaven has not been trusted yet to become a Premier League regular. Hence, it won’t be a surprise if Shaw makes his 10th straight top-flight appearance.
The scenario could be different later this year. Lisandro Martinez is working hard to return to first-team action after a long-term knee injury in February.
The Argentine could become a regular starter in Amorim’s plans during the festive schedule. His return could be delayed until after the international break.
