Chelsea’s best player without a goal or assist against Sunderland creates 3 chances

Chelsea lost to Sunderland yesterday at Stamford Bridge, another disappointing performance from the Blues to snap a winning streak just as they threatened to pick up some form.

The Blues were really poor – but who was their best player?

SofaScore had five players rated above 7/10. Josh Acheampong got a seven (we thought he was actually our best player, and he was taken off before we conceded the final goal). Alejandro Garnacho got a 7.2, likely boosted heavily by his goal, which was well taken to be fair.

Then Enzo Fernandez, Reece James and Pedro Net got a 7.4. They were all decent, to be fair. James is always a threat from right back, Neto got the assist for Chelsea’s goal and Enzo had probably the best stats in the game.

He created 3 chances, and had an xG + xA of 0.56. He got stuck in too, with 5 defensive recoveries and a clearance.

Enzo actually hit 3 shots on target himself, which is just what we want in a game where we desperately need a goal. But his problem was similar to the rest of the team – he completed 0 of his 3 crosses. The team as a whole were dreadful in delivering the ball from wide areas, repeatedly hitting the first man or overhitting the cross completely.

With both Marc Guiu and Joao Pedro on the pitch, they needed to do better to threaten from those areas.

In other news…

Trevoh Chalobah was also asked to explain the defeat, and he really struggled to come up with anything, much like his manager. At least he stood up to be counted.

It wasn’t just defensively that the Blues struggled – Joao Pedro and Marc Guiu were anonymous up top, raising major questions about our attacking system.
