Amorim now wants Man Utd to sign “world-class” star, Ratcliffe has snubbed request – report

Manchester United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has no plans of signing Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski on a free transfer next summer, according to Sunday Mirror (page 71).

The Poland international has been a fantastic player for the Catalan giants, but his future could be away from the Blaugrana. There are no plans of extending his contract expiring next summer.

This is expected to trigger plenty of interest from elite European clubs. Sunday Mirror claim that Amorim is a long-term admirer of the Pole and believes his arrival would benefit some players at United.

However, Ratcliffe has no desire of sanctioning a Bosman deal.

The 73-year-old does not want to repeat mistakes of the past, where they signed the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Edinson Cavani, Bastian Schweinsteiger among others on big weekly wages.

Lewandowski earns a staggering £540,000 per week at Barcelona despite turning 37. With United having concentrated on lowering their wage bill, a move for Lewandowski is not a viable option.

Ratcliffe makes right decision on Lewandowski

The Red Devils have had concerns with the Profit and Sustainability Rules over the past few years. They have not been helped by the lack of European football revenue this campaign.

The club still managed to bring in quality talent last summer. Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, Benjamin Sesko and Senne Lammens have become key players under manager Ruben Amorim.

Lewandowski, hailed as ‘world-class‘ by Jupp Heynckes, has been a proven match-winner over the years. He joined Barcelona at almost 34 in 2022, and has already bagged 105 goals and 20 assists from 156 appearances in all competitions.

However, he is currently 37 and could be past his prime very soon. The Pole has already missed seven games with a hamstring injury this term, and he had a similar concern in the final phase of last season.

Lewandowski has personally admitted that his workload may need to be managed during the twilight of his career. Hence, Ratcliffe has made the right decision to snub the opportunity to sign the former Bayern Munich man on a free transfer.
