The scary stats around Joao Pedro and Chelsea’s other strikers

Of course we prefer absorbing Chelsea content after we win, but after a defeat it’s just as important to see what others are saying and thinking.

Scary stats around Chelsea striker

The London is Blue podcast have been looking back over Saturday’s painful loss, and they’ve taken note of a few things. One was on the subject of Marc Guiu and Joao Pedro, our two striker options. Both of them played in the game against Sunderland, and far from helping each other out, they looked equally lost.

After the game, Enzo Maresca defended JP by saying he’s injured. Well in that case, don’t play him…

“Marc Guiu and Joao Pedro and some of shot volume situations here. I mean, last 5 appearances across all matches, Joao Pedro has two shots. Guiu had two shots in this game along. Guiu in less than 90 minutes got more shots off than Joao Pedro did in three full 90 minutes, an 84 minutes and a 74 minutes to get two shots.”

You can see their discussion in the clip embedded here:

Fair play to Guiu for managing that. He only had 10 touches in the game, so clearly he wasn’t doing much other than shooting. JP has the opposite problem – he sometimes does some nice stuff in link up, but those are just some scary facts about their output.

We pointed out his low open play goals from last season, and despite a fast start, the same problems seem to affect him

In other news…

One player we’re convinced will keep his place is Alejandro Garnacho, who went quiet after his early goal, but did carry the ball enough to be valuable to a static team.

A solid defence would really help Chelsea in this tough time, so it’s no surprise to see them linked to players like Dayot Upamecano, who will be available this summer.
