Tim Sherwood defends Jadon Sancho latest in Aston Villa win vs Manchester City

PL News Tuesday 28 October 2025 - 09:58

Unai Emery made headlines by bringing on Jadon Sancho, only to later take him off again, as Aston Villa battled to victory against Manchester City on Sunday.

Amadou Onana was immense for Aston Villa in the 1-0 victory against City, as the midfielder shone despite calls for him to be dropped.

Pau Torres also had a fantastic game against Man City, in what may have been the defender’s best outing in a Villa shirt.

Tensions are growing around Harvey Elliott’s Villa future, as a loan deal could be on the cards for January.

Emery wasn’t afraid of upsetting Sancho with his calls to secure the three points, and former Aston Villa manager Tim Sherwood has jumped to his defence.

Tim Sherwood reacts to Jadon Sancho controversy at Aston Villa

Emi Buendia has turned his Villa career around this season with standout performances, grabbing another assist against City.

However, unfortunately for Villa, Emery was forced to withdraw the Argentine due to injury, which saw Sancho replace him, with the latter withdrawn in the second half in place of Evann Guessand.

Emery’s decision has come into the spotlight, but Sherwood believes that the Villa head coach knows best, while speaking on The Good, The Bad & The Football podcast.

Sherwood said: “Buendia comes off, he’s [Emery] thrown him [Sancho] on, and he’s ended up playing 60 odd minutes, so he probably played a lot more than he thought, but Jadon’s reaction, he knows other people are going to look at it and say it’s negative.

“But I think when you actually read into it, this manager knows what he’s doing, well organised, so diligent with the decision he makes.

“I think he’s a good man manager as well, and I think Jadon needs that. I like the boy and he’s got a lot of ability.”

Sancho was just another signing this summer, who, like Elliott, looks in danger of his Villa career fizzling out.

Sancho looked lively against Manchester City

At Borussia Dortmund, Sancho seemed one of England’s top talents, and with his form in Germany, he was given a chance to play for Gareth Southgate on the international stage.

Since moving to Manchester United in 2021, Sancho has been on a steady decline in performances, but still, at 25 years old, it’s no surprise to see that Villa took the gamble on him.

Sancho almost got on the score sheet against City, and had he scored, we may not have seen Emery make the substitution.

The winger still has lots to offer, as Villa fans need to hope that this only drives Sancho on to up his game at B6.
