Arteta loses two players to injury ahead of Brighton clash

Arsenal may be flying high at the top of the English football pyramid, but their ongoing battle with injuries shows no sign of easing.

Already without Gabriel Jesus, Kai Havertz, Noni Madueke and Martin Odegaard, the Gunners ended Sunday’s 1-0 win over Crystal Palace with fresh concerns over William Saliba, Declan Rice, Riccardo Calafiori and Gabriel Martinelli.

Ahead of Brighton’s visit to the Emirates on Wednesday, Mikel Arteta offered a mixed update:

“Saliba is out, he won’t be involved in this match. Rice will be available. Calafiori, yes [available]. Martinelli, it looks as well as though he is going to be out. This game will come too early for him.”

The boss added it was too early to tell how long Saliba and Martinelli would be sidelined. As for Saka, who was ill last week but recovered enough to start against the Eagles, he’s “going to be fine.”

Given the Gunners have three away games in quick succession after tomorrow, the loss of two more players is far from ideal.

That said, with the likes of Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapie offering depth in defence, and youngsters Ethan Nwaneri and Max Dowman ready to pick up the slack in attack, hopefully we’ll be able to muddle on.
