If you haven’t been paying attention the talk of the footballing world this season is a sudden change in the direction of the game.
After a long period where possession was everything and teams just wanted to play out from the back, suddenly set pieces – including long throws – are everything. Arsenal are the best at it, and they’re top of the league.
Maresca admits he could change up long throw philosophy
Talk of all this has finally trickled down to Enzo Maresca, perhaps after Chelsea conceded their equaliser on Saturday to a long throw from Sunderland.
Enzo Maresca was asked whether he would be starting to use these tactics anytime soon, and looked to backtrack on comments from last week where he had appeared to say he wasn’t going to follow the trend. He said he had been misunderstood, and would in fact be looking to “evolve” with the game and use them someday:
“As a human being you can say something, but then you have a million people that can interpret it in a different way. And what I can control is what I say. What I cannot control is the mind of people, how they can interpret it. I said that in this moment we are not looking for a long throw in. [But] because I’m a manager, I love to evolve. Probably one day I will use [long throws]. These are my words.”

One player who has done well despite our struggles is Pedro Neto, although Enzo Maresca is still demanding more from him, as he revealed when speaking in the presser today.
Chelsea struggle for consistency in their results, and a lot of that is because they don’t have any consistency in selection. Rotation and injuries have meant there’s not been a proper central defensive pair established, and Maresca admitted that has hurt his team.
