'Really smart business' – Finance expert impressed by Aston Villa clause amid UEFA concern

Aston Villa look to have conducted excellent transfer business with Enzo Barrenechea.

Barrenechea signed for Villa in 2024 alongside Samuel Iling-Junior as part of the deal that saw Douglas Luiz join Juventus.

Unai Emery didn’t keep the Argentine around despite Barrenechea impressing for Villa against Walsall in pre-season.

Barrenechea went on to shine at Valencia last season before once again going out on loan to Benfica for the current campaign.

The Villans look set to benefit from Barrenechea’s spell at the Stadium of Light as their clever work in the market looks to have paid off.

Aston Villa have already made £10m from Enzo Barrenechea

Benfica had to pay Villa £10million for Barrenechea once he hit 15 appearances for the Liga Portugal giants.

The Argentine has already featured 17 times in red and has triggered the clause that will see the midfielder sign permanently next summer.

Villa have already guaranteed themselves a loan fee and will now wait on this obligatory rate once his loan spell comes to an end in the summer.

The Villans’ troubles with financial regulations have been well documented in recent years, with this Barrenechea deal representing a positive step forward.

Financial expert Dan Plumley has been left impressed by this contractual clause that almost guaranteed the B6 club a positive fee.

Speaking exclusively to Villa News, Plumley said: “We’ve seen lots of clubs do this recently.

We know Villa are under the cosh with UEFA; we know they’ve been fined against Squad Cost Rules.

If you’re going to put these clauses in there with values around them that are going to be hit and everyone agrees to that, it can be really smart business.

Barrenechea could have been excellent for Aston Villa

There are always going to be pros and cons when it comes to transfers, especially when there are such fine margins at Bodymoor Heath.

Only Evann Guessand came in over the summer for a fee as Villa were unable to spend elsewhere in their squad.

Taking advantage of what was already there could have been wise, especially given the high expectations surrounding Barrenechea after fans got a brief glimpse of him in B6.

Unfortunately, the prospect of paying a sizable fee for a player who had never featured in a competitive game was too good to turn down.

The Argentine has gone on to prove his quality in two top leagues, but Villa have almost benefited financially from these agreements.

Monchi has come under fire since leaving the Midlands, but it feels as if this Barrenechea deal has benefited everyone.
