Paul Merson makes Chelsea claim ahead of “crucial” Carabao Cup tie against Wolves

Paul Merson has claimed  Chelsea are under “severe pressure” to win a trophy this season, after a disappointing start to the campaign.

Chelsea currently sit ninth in the table after their defeat to Sunderland last weekend, and have won just four of their opening nine games.

The Blues should have more points on the board given their run of fixtures, but they have once again struggled to find consistency.

Paul Merson on Chelsea season

The expectation is for Chelsea to once again qualify for the Champions League, but fans are growing impatient and want to see a title challenge and a league title as soon as possible.

When that’s going to happen is unclear, but Chelsea haven’t been competitive in the league since they last won the title under Antonio Conte.

Merson believes Chelsea are under pressure to win a trophy this season.

Merson believes Maresca wants to win the league, but claimed Chelsea are now under “severe” pressure to win a trophy given their start to the season.

“He will want to win the Premier League, that’s the real test he told Sky Sports.

“You can lose more games in the Champions League than in the Premier League but still go on and lift the cup, that’s why the league is still the holy grail.

“Because of how it has gone in the league so far, Chelsea are under severe pressure to win a trophy.

“It makes the game against Wolves on Wednesday crucial. It’s a big football match.

“Chelsea would have gone second in the league with a win on Saturday but now they are ninth. That result has really cranked up the pressure, especially with a trip to Spurs next Saturday too.”

Wolves await in the Carabao Cup

The Carabao Cup represents the first chance to win silverware this season, with Chelsea travelling to Wolves on Wednesday night for their last 16 tie.

Maresca’s men were knocked out early on by Newcastle last season, and will be looking to once again get back to Wembley.

The Blues haven’t won a domestic cup since 2018, and this represents as good a chance as any to get their hands on another trophy this season.
