Unai Emery will be fuming as Premier League make announcement ahead of Liverpool vs Aston Villa

PL News Wednesday 29 October 2025 - 11:13

The Premier League have announced that Paul Tierney will be on video assistant referee duty when Aston Villa take on Liverpool on Saturday.

Villa beat Manchester City 1-0 on Sunday, and are looking to extend their run of consecutive Premier League wins to five.

The Villans have recovered from an abysmal start to the season, beating Fulham, Burnley, Tottenham and Manchester City in what has been a superb run of form.

Amadou Onana was lauded for his impact against Manchester City, with the midfielder’s return from injury key to the impressive defensive showing.

Liverpool are predicted as the heavy favourites to beat Villa on Saturday, despite losing four consecutive Premier League matches.

Paul Tierney to assist Stuart Attwell on VAR duty as Aston Villa face Liverpool

The Premier League have announced that Stuart Attwell will be the on-field referee for Villa‘s trip to Anfield.

The Englishman has overseen 21 Villa games over the last 16 years, with the vast majority coming in the Premier League.

It will come as good news for the Villans that their team have generally performed well when overseen by Attwell, winning 11 of those 21 occasions, and losing just five times.

Most recently, however, the 43-year-old was in charge as Crystal Palace beat Villa 3-0 at Villa Park in August, and pointed to the spot when Marco Bizot took down Daichi Kamada – although the Dutchman could have few complaints.

It will come as more of a concern to Unai Emery that Tierney will be the man on VAR, however, with the pair sharing a tumultuous recent history.

Unai Emery slammed Tierney last season

Coincidentally, it was at Anfield last season that Emery took a swipe at Tierney’s officiating on VAR.

Liverpool had beaten Villa 2-0, but the Spaniard was up in arms about an incident that took place shortly after the break.

Pau Torres appeared to be tugged back in the box by Conor Bradley, but referee David Coote was not interested, and neither was Tierney on VAR.

Speaking after the game, Emery said: “I know in Europe this is a penalty but here in England, they want to use VAR but I don’t know exactly where because in this situation it is clear.

“I always respect the decision of the referee and I respect it but for me, when I watched it with VAR it is a clear penalty.

And, of course, it was in a very important moment in the game because if we had the opportunity to shoot the penalty, maybe the match would have been different.

“I accept the result and the referee’s decision but I don’t agree.”

With Tierney set to oversee the same fixture on Saturday, Emery will hope to not see a repeat of last season’s events.
