We reported yesterday on Enzo Maresca’s press conference comments about back fours and back fives, and now there’s more information about it.
Maresca sets his analysis special task to try and solve tactical question
The Chelsea boss went on a slightly curious rant where he tried to explain how frustrating it was to prepare for a team to play a back four, only for them to play a back five. Which is exactly what Sunderland did on Saturday.
Now Kieran Gill’s piece for the Daily Mail adds more detail – after defeat on Saturday Maresca set his analysts the task of working out how best to break down teams set up that way.
“He asked them to look over last season’s losses to sides who set up in this way for clues. In particular, he wants to find new ways in which they can break down those stubborn sides who place bodies behind the ball.
“It has been an issue, after all, and Sunderland were not the first to spring a surprise on this Chelsea side who cannot wait for Cole Palmer to return to help unlock troublesome back lines.”
As Gill notes, both tonight’s opposition Wolves and Sunday’s opposition Tottenham are happy to use back 5 formations. And given how much Enzo Maresca has tipped his hand, that’s exactly what we should be expecting them to do.
In other news…
Former Arsenal man Paul Merson has pointed to some of the flaws in the Chelsea squad that have got them to the situation they’re in now.
Merson also thinks that tonight’s game will be “crucial” for Enzo Maresca, who has had a slow start in the league and needs to keep competing in cups to add to his CV.
