“Why wouldn’t they?” – Insider claims Chelsea set to prioritise one position in January

We’re now closer to January than we are to the summer, so you can expect transfer rumours to ramp up. Today, transfer insider Graeme Bailey has been speaking about Chelsea’s potential winter moves.

In quotes picked up by the Chelsea Chronicle, the transfer insider insisted that Chelsea would consider swooping in January in one position in particular:

“The centre-back position is an issue. We’re getting there now,” Bailey said.

“Obviously, we did a piece about Upamecano where Chelsea are one of the ones talking to him as well. Why wouldn’t they be? Same as Marc Guehi. Why wouldn’t they be talking to these people?

“Chelsea are not ruling out a defender in January, but we’ll see where we are with it. It’s fascinating.”

Bailey notes that both Dayot Upamecano and Marc Guehi are being watched by the Blues.

What do those two have in common? Their contracts run out at the end of the season, meaning they could be available for a knock down price in January. However, it also means there will be a huge amount of interest in them from other teams, too…

Despite Baileys’ enthusiasm, we wouldn’t be too confident about the Blues making a defender move in January. They’ve got a few on the books already, and clearly like the potential of Aaron Anselmino and Mamadou Sarr, currently out on loan.
