Enzo Maresca is taking his press conference after Chelsea’s win over Wolves in the FA Cup, and while it should have been a friendly one, the events of the second half made it tense.
Chelsea almost threw away a 3 goal lead, and then things got really awful when they got a red card. Liam Delap got two yellows in seven minutes on his return from injury to reduce his team to ten at a crucial moment.
Maresca unloads after “embarrassing” red
So far Enzo Maresca has insisted on defending his players through this nightmare run of embarrassing reds, but today he finally snapped and called out his players for their indiscipline.
Asked if it was a deserved red, Maresca said it was, “absolutely, yes. A stupid foul, we can avoid that.”
“I completely understand when there are red cards like Brighton or Man United that is difficult, but red card against Nottingham Forest and red card today, both we can avoid that. And we have to avoid that… Yes, it’s embarrassing when it’s a red card like today.”
Maresca even said he had tried to speak to Delap after the first yellow to try to tell him to calm down – clearly it had no effect:
“Yes, after the yellow card I told him four or five times to keep calm. But Liam is a player that when he’s inside the pitch probably he’ll be playing the game for himself and he struggles to realise and to listen around him.”
The striker is now suspended for Sunday’s game against Tottenham.
In other news…
The pick of Chelsea’s goals was Jamie Gittens’ rocket strike of a bouncing volley to finish the game at the end. Two goals in quick succession in the first half looked to have sealed the game early – you can see Tyrique George and Estevao’s efforts in the clips embedded here.
Chelsea had taken the lead tonight through Andrey Santos, who banged in his first Blues’ goal with a shot from the edge of the area which you can see here.
