Matty Cash has been nominated for the Premier League’s Player of the Month award for October.

Aston Villa beat Manchester City 1-0 last week, but it was their defender who stole all of the headlines with a superb performance.

Cash was named in the Premier League team of the week, and grabbed the winner with a stunning strike from the edge of the box.

The Poland international has shown a knack for shooting from range this season, and also scored against Sunderland in September.

Cash agreed a new contract at Villa and signed it this week, completing what has been a stunning turnaround in form for the 28-year-old.

Matty Cash would be first Aston Villa winner since 2015

Cash‘s goal against Manchester City only capped off what had already been a brilliant month for the right-back, and for Villa.

Unai Emery‘s side won all three of their Premier League fixtures, seeing off Burnley, Tottenham, and Manchester City at Villa Park.

Premier League Player of the Month – Winners from Aston Villa Month(s)
Christian Benteke April 2015
Ashley Young December 2008, September 2008, April 2008
Gabby Agbonlahor November 2007
Paul Merson February 2000
Gareth Southgate January 2000
Dion Dublin November 1998
Dwight Yorke February 1996

After what had been a terrible start to the season, the Villans now look well-placed to drive towards the Premier League’s top five.

If Cash were to be named player of the month, he will be the first Villa player to win the award since Christian Benteke did in 2015.

The Belgian won the award for his performances in April, scoring five goals in three Premier League games, including goals against Tottenham and Manchester United, and a hat-trick against QPR.

Cash is up for the award against Bruno Guimaraes, Erling Haaland, Eli Junior Kroupi, Bryan Mbeumo, Nordi Mukiele, Igor Thiago, and Jurrien Timber.

Cash in October by numbers

Cash kicked off his October with a strong performance against Burnley, completing 89 per cent of his passes, making two recoveries and creating a chance.

But it was the latter two games in which the right-back really stood out. Against Tottenham, he won four of his six duels, was fouled twice, and made four clearances in a strong win for Emery’s side.

In addition to scoring the winner against Manchester City, Cash won four duels, completed two tackles, and made four clearances amid several defensive contributions, which earned Villa the clean sheet.

It was his stunning strike which made the difference, and the defender could have had an assist too, creating one big chance.

Cash has not always been the most popular figure at Villa Park, but the 28-year-old’s prime looks to have come at the perfect time for Villa.
