Another game has passed and we’re left wondering with just more questions about Wesley Fofana.
After recovering from his latest long term injury, the central defender played 45 minutes against Brentford in the league at the end of September, then 64 minutes against Manchester United a week later. All seemed to be progressing well.
Wesley Fofana’s patchy return to action
His first full 90 came in the last round of the EFL Cup, when we faced Lincoln. He got a concussion in that game and so missed the games against Brighton, Benfica and Liverpool. Still, all seemed to be going well.
But when we returned to action against Nottingham Forest, he wasn’t even on the bench. He then played 90 minutes against Ajax, but Sunderland last weekend had disappeared. Last night he was on the bench again.
We’re getting confused now – is he being saved for this weekend’s game against Spurs? If he’s not, why didn’t he play last night? One would have thought that after such a patchy recent period, playing half an hour or so last night would have been helpful.
Is he really going to be ready for an intense London derby with just 90 minutes played in the last month? It seems a stretch – there could be something going on we don’t know about. We wonder if Enzo will be asked about it tomorrow.
In other news…
Andrey Santos was also impressive last night, racking up good numbers in both offensive and defensive stats. He’s got to be in line for more Premier League starts soon.
Another player who impressed was Jamie Gittens, who finally put in a consistent showing for a full game and really caused havoc down the left and was universally called the man of the match.
