Harvey Elliott has desperately struggled since he joined Aston Villa on deadline day in the summer.
The 22-year-old is extremely highly rated, but he found regular Premier League football hard to come by during Liverpool’s title-winning campaign last term.
Elliott’s situation played perfectly into Aston Villa’s hands on the face of it, but things haven’t worked out for the midfielder so far in B6.
He has quickly fallen out of favour with Unai Emery, and that has brought his situation at Villa Park under scrutiny just months into his time with the club.
Ex-employee wants Aston Villa to back out of Harvey Elliott deal
Aston Villa signed Elliott on a season-long loan deal, with the obligation to buy him at the end of the season, provided he made a certain number of appearances.
It has now been revealed by The Athletic that the threshold to trigger that clause stands at 10 appearances throughout the campaign.
The former Fulham starlet has already turned out for the Villans on five occasions in all competitions this season, meaning that they are rapidly running out of time to avoid being tied into the £35million permanent deal.
- Elliott captained England’s U21s to Euros glory in the summer
- He was limited to just two league starts at Liverpool last season
- He has played just 97 minutes of league football for Villa so far
With that in mind, ex-Villa scout Bryan King – speaking exclusively to Villa News – believes that Emery and Co. must do everything that they can to try and cancel the deal for Elliott.
“I would (cancel the deal),” King said.
“He’s done nothing at all since he’s been at Villa, and he certainly doesn’t look like a £35m player. I think when January comes around, it’d be best to try and move him on. Villa have obviously promised him plenty, and he hasn’t produced.
“He’ll be on decent money there as well. He’s come into Villa almost as the star man for the season, and he’s only played five games.

“For a £35m footballer who’s young and ambitious, you’d have expected him to be in the starting XI every week.”

Aston Villa guilty of panic buying on deadline day
Jadon Sancho is stuck in a similar situation at Aston Villa, as his season-long loan deal has also proven to be anything but fruitful so far this term.
The high-profile duo were among a group of three new arrivals on deadline day, alongside Victor Lindelof, and none have had the desired effect so far.
Elliott and Sancho have just one goal contribution between them in all competitions, while Lindelof has only played 21 minutes of league action all season.
Villa’s summer was dominated by their PSR concerns limiting their ability to spend, and their careless string of panicked signings in the final hours of the window will certainly not have helped their cause in that respect.
