Why Chelsea’s build-up play gave former player “nightmares” in the summer

Chelsea ended up winning the Club World Cup in the summer, but it really didn’t look like that was going to happen about halfway through when they were beaten by Flamengo in the group stage.

The Blues had had a couple of pretty uncertain games already, and losing to the Brazilian side in meek fashion was a low point. After having taken the lead, Chelsea conceded 3 and had a man sent off.  There was a lot of frustration around.

From that point in the tournament, Enzo Maresca’s men got better and better, peaking in the final with a comfortable win over PSG. But things hadn’t looked positive after that game.

Filipe Luis admits to “nightmares” of facing Chelsea

It was really interesting to hear from Flamengo boss Filipe Luis, speaking in

“The days before the game, I felt really bad, because when I watched Chelsea playing and the way tactical Maresca is, I thought, ‘Oh, we’re done. It was gonna be tough’,” the former Blues defender said on Jon Obi Mikel’s podcast.

“Because Chelsea for me is really one of the best tactical teams in Europe, and it’s almost impossible to pressure Chelsea the way they build from the back, and I was having nightmares during the night.”

He needn’t have worried. He really impressed us with his coaching in that game, and we’re sure we will hear him linked with the Chelsea job in the future.

In other news…

Jamie Gittens was the star of the show last night as Chelsea took down Wolves in the EFL Cup, and he had some really nice quotes available after the game.

There are some odd questions around Wesley Fofana at the moment – he didn’t play a minute last night in a game it would have been perfect for him to pick up some match fitness in.
