Going on loan is seen as a major step in a player’s development but for Daniel Oyetunde his first temporary transfer away from Arsenal has come in rather unusual circumstances.
The striker, who signed for Arsenal as a schoolboy, put pen to paper on his first professional contract in the summer.
However, despite featuring at that level when he was a schoolboy Oyetunde has found it difficult to break into Arsenal’s U21 team and so far this season has been an unused substitute on two occasions, while he hasn’t been able to get on the pitch.
Despite that, the 18-year-old has now linked up with St Albans City on a youth loan deal which is set to last until the end of November.
Oyetunde could feature when St Albans face Burton Albion in the FA Cup first round tomorrow and he will also be looking to gain experience in the Isthmian League.
It will be interesting to see whether the deal could be extended thereafter, especially as Oyetunde is unlikely to receive much playing time in the U21 side at Arsenal where he is behind the likes of Andre Harriman-Annous in the pecking order.
Left-back Cam’ron Ismail has found himself in a similar situation where he is on the fringes of the U21 squad despite having signed professional terms in the summer.
If Oyetunde’s loan move proves beneficial for his progress then it could well be the case that a similar arrangement could be made for Ismail at a non-league club.
