Tyrone Mings is likely to miss at least a month of action after Unai Emery confirmed that the defender suffered a hamstring injury against Liverpool on Saturday.
Aston Villa were beaten 2-0 by Liverpool at Anfield, with goals from Mohamed Salah and Ryan Gravenberch handing Emery‘s team their first Premier League loss since August.
Pau Torres had started the game in place of the 32-year-old, who was brought on in the 74th minute but could not finish the game.
Mings had already suffered an ankle injury in October, which kept him out for a few weeks before he returned against Go Ahead Eagles.
Villa were sent a warning about potential muscular injuries for Mings, with the defender suffering from several big issues in recent years.
Unai Emery confirms Tyrone Mings injury
Emi Martinez took much of the criticism after the Liverpool defeat, with the Argentine goalkeeper giving away the ball for the home side’s opener.
It had been a strong start for Emery’s side, who were looking to hand the Reds their fifth consecutive Premier League defeat.
But mistakes would ultimately be their undoing, with Torres also giving the ball away carelessly in the build-up to Gravenberch’s goal.
The injury to Mings will be among Emery’s chief concerns, however, with the Spaniard confirming after the game that the defender will be out for “weeks”.
“It is a hamstring injury,” Emery said. “Normally, some weeks he will be out with an injury like that. Tomorrow we will test him and know exactly how many matches he will miss.”
What games Mings will likely miss at Aston Villa
Mings’ pain was immediately visible, with the defender grabbing his leg and heading straight off.
After looking at the footage, injury analyst Physio Scout wrote on social media that Villa will have to wait to conduct scans to uncover the full extent of the problem, but that Emery’s comments suggest a grade two or grade three hamstring injury.
The former would result in at least four weeks on the injury table, while the latter would see Mings potentially out of action until January.
In the worst-case scenario, the defender would require surgery, which would see him unable to return for three to five months.

Mings will certainly miss key matches against Bournemouth, Brighton, Arsenal, Manchester United, and Chelsea, at least.
Villa will hope, however, that the 32-year-old can return by the time Everton travel to Villa Park, which will take place on 17 January.
