Manchester United Women continued their brilliant start to the campaign in the Women’s Super League, winning 3-2 at Brighton & Hove Albion on Sunday afternoon.
The hosts began the game on the front foot and had two consecutive efforts inside six minutes, but none troubled Phallon Tullis-Joyce in the United goal.
United had their first sight of goal in the eighth minute, when Jess Park’s shot from the edge of the box was calmly collected by goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie.
Elisabeth Terland missed a chance to give United the lead in the 17th minute, firing a right-footed shot wide of the post.
Just after the half-hour mark, Tullis-Joyce had to be alert, denying Jelena Cankovic from scoring for the Seagulls.
United drew the first blood on the stroke of halftime through Terland, whose shot from the centre of the box found the bottom right corner.
Toone nearly doubled United’s advantage before the break, but her effort was saved by Nnadozie.
Two minutes before the hour mark, Park made it 2-0, collecting a brilliant pass from Toone before slotting the ball home.
Brighton responded positively and deservedly pulled one back in the 68th minute through Fran Kirby.
The hosts could not build on the momentum as it was United that looked more likely to score the next goal.
Six minutes from time, Nnadozie superbly prevented Terland from restoring United’s two-goal cushion, parrying the ball over the crossbar.
However, the Nigerian goalkeeper could do nothing to stop Lisa Naalsund from adding to United’s advantage just before full-time.
Two minutes into the stoppage time, Kiko Seike reduced the deficit for Brighton but United held on to secure the maximum points.
Despite the victory, United are still third in the standings but are just two points adrift of table-toppers Chelsea.
