Man United could recall 19yo academy star from loan after shock six-game bench spell

Manchester United could soon be forced to recall one of their brightest academy prospects from his loan spell in January.

Elyh Harrison joined Shrewsbury Town on a season-long loan in the summer, hoping to gain valuable first-team experience.

The young goalkeeper was thrown straight into the action, starting the first eight games of the campaign but managed to keep just one clean sheet.

He conceded 13 goals in six League Two appearances before being dropped to the bench.

Harrison has not played since the last week of September and has been on the bench for the last six clashes.

The 19-year-old made one error directly leading to a goal and has conceded more than expected based on the xGOT faced (8.98).

His save percentage of 61% has fallen well below expectations for a keeper of his potential.

He made 21 saves in the league but has only stepped out to act as a sweeper keeper five times, an area he must improve on to fit the modern style.

Harrison is highly rated at the academy and even won the 2023/24 Denzil Haroun Under-21 Player of the Year Award.

The loan was seen as the perfect opportunity for him to make the next leap in his development.

This is his second temporary spell away from the Red Devils.

He previously spent five months with Chester FC before being recalled early in January 2025.

Radek Vitek remains his direct competition between the sticks, and the Czech youngster has been sensational on loan at Bristol City.

Harrison may need a reset. A recall to Carrington in January could allow him to regain confidence by playing a few matches for the Under-21s before heading out on another short-term loan.

The competition for goalkeeping spots at United is fierce, and if Harrison wants to break into the senior setup, he will need to raise his game quickly.
