Aston Villa had their recent resurgence halted with a 2-0 defeat at Liverpool on Saturday night.
The B6 outfit made the trip to Merseyside on the back of four straight Premier League wins, but were soundly beaten thanks to goals from Mohamed Salah and Ryan Gravenberch.
Amadou Onana was excellent for Aston Villa once again, as he continued his bright run of recent performances, but it was a frustrating evening for the visitors on the whole.
Nevertheless, Unai Emery’s men have got themselves firmly back on track in recent weeks, and one particular star has unsurprisingly been central to that.
Lucas Digne tops Premier League list since start of 2024-25
Lucas Digne has been a reliable player for Aston Villa over the years, and his performance levels have been typically impressive so far this season.
The left-back doesn’t get the same level of credit as some of the more eye-catching names in the Villans’ squad, but he is a crucial part of the team that Emery would rather not go without.
The Frenchman has started in nine of his side’s 10 league games so far this term, and featured in all bar 12 minutes of their recent winning run.
Digne is one of only five Villa players to have created a big chance so far in 2025-26, while nobody in the squad can better his current average of 0.9 key passes per game, as per Sofascore.
That ability to create golden opportunities for his teammates is something that is unrivalled across the entire Premier League, with no full-back having created more big chances than Digne since the start of last season, according to WhoScored via their X account.
The 32-year-old’s creative prowess is hugely impressive when compared to some of the big names in the division, with his tally of 15 surpassing even the likes of Pedro Porro and Daniel Munoz.
Lucas Digne deserves more credit at Aston Villa
Digne had a difficult night for Aston Villa on Saturday, as he was exposed to a rampant Salah for the majority of the evening.
However, the defender is generally deserving of more credit for his performances over the last few years.
As Villa have progressed as a club, they have collected a wealth of talented and valuable players, many of whom are constantly improving.
Digne has remained a regular throughout their recent rise, and is keeping the more youthful Ian Maatsen out of the team once again this term.
The former Everton man is generally a very reliable option on the left of the backline, and he is still one of his team’s biggest creative outlets, despite the more exciting options elsewhere on the pitch.
