Evann Guessand has struggled drastically since signing for Aston Villa.
Aston Villa lost 2-0 to Liverpool on Saturday at Anfield, with goals from Mohamed Salah and Ryan Gravenberch separating the sides.
Unai Emery‘s side had gone into the game on the back of four consecutive Premier League victories, while Liverpool had suffered four consecutive losses – the exact opposite.
Guessand missed a huge chance in the first half against Liverpool, with the winger eventually coming off 15 minutes into the second half on 1 November.
Emi Martinez was also slammed for his performance against Liverpool, after the goalkeeper gave away the ball cheaply to allow Salah to score the opener.
Evann Guessand appalling vs Liverpool
Guessand has provided something different for Villa since his arrival, and has clearly caught the eye of Emery, given how much the Spaniard appears to trust him.
But the Ivory Coast international’s inconsistency can surely not be continuously ignored.
| Evann Guessand | Premier League 2025-26 |
| Appearances | 9 |
| Goals | 0 |
| Assists | 0 |
| Shots | 3 |

Against Liverpool, Guessand had just one shot, 12 touches of the ball, was dispossessed twice, and won none of his six ground duels.
In a dreadful stat, though, the winger somehow managed just one successful pass in 59 minutes.
It was a staggeringly bad performance from the 24-year-old, who continues to retain the faith of Emery over the likes of Donyell Malen, despite the clear improvement the Dutchman brings in the final third.
Guessand’s one pass completed against Liverpool actually travelled backwards, and was played on the halfway line.
According to Statmuse, no player to have played more than 30 minutes of a Premier League match this season has completed fewer passes than Guessand did against Liverpool.

What more does Donyell Malen need to do?
Before the international break, Malen smashed in two goals against Burnley and looked to have finally had the moment that would see him become key for Villa.
But in the game following, Emery started the winger in a different position to the one in which he had thrived, and brought him off after 61 minutes.
In the games since, Malen has returned to the bench and once again finds himself attempting to leave an impression in 30 minutes on the pitch.
Given Guessand’s performance on Saturday, the Dutchman must be wondering what more he can do.
