Manchester United have had a good start to the Premier League season, and they are presently just one point behind the Champions League places.
There has been a notable improvement in the final third after the summer spending. The focus should now be on adding extra defensive resolve.
A holding midfielder could be prioritised next year, but the Red Devils could also enter the transfer market for a marquee central defender.
Defensa Central now claim that United are ready to ‘get in the way’ of Real Madrid, and they are willing to offer a ‘huge sum of money’ for Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi in January.
Guehi’s current contract with Palace expires at the end of the season, and there is a possibility that Palace could accept a good fee to sanction his transfer this winter.
Madrid would ideally prefer to negotiate a pre-contract for next summer, but such plans could be scuppered with United having now ‘set their sights’ on Guehi.
United must sign Guehi ahead of Madrid in January
Liverpool reached a verbal agreement to land Guehi from the Eagles for £35 million last summer, but the deal broke down on deadline day as Palace could not find a replacement.
Palace manager Oliver Glasner was also adamant about keeping the England international, and the Eagles had no choice but to recall the defender after his medical with the Reds.
Guehi’s attitude has been tremendous on his return to Palace. He has been hugely respectful to the London outfit and could pursue a new challenge in either January or next summer.
In our view, Guehi would be a fantastic acquisition for United. He has completed almost 87 percent of his passes this campaign and has been exceptional in the defensive scheme of things.
The centre-back has won 6.2 duels per game with a 67 percent success rate. He has also made 2.2 tackles, 3.5 recoveries and 5.3 recoveries on average for the reigning FA Cup champions.
The 25-year-old is at the top of his game, and United must look to prise him away in January. Madrid could seek a pre-contract agreement or a potential bargain deal in the New Year.
United can scupper their plans by making a more lucrative bid for Guehi. Liverpool were ready to pay £35m for Guehi. A £25m bid in January would surely persuade the Eagles to sell.
Guehi is well accomplished to playing in a back three under Glasner. He has been primarily used as a left-side centre-back, but can also operate from a central or right-sided role if required.
The Englishman could be convinced to join United with a regular starting role. He would be a game-changer signing in January and would boost their prospects of European football.
