Chelsea Spurs was an ugly game, but it ended up with the right result for Chelsea, and a really worrying situation for their opposition.
Timid Spurs beaten by Chelsea’s energy and enthusiasm
Jamie Carragher is on Monday Night Football, and he broke down just what Chelsea did right and what Tottenham did wrong in their game.
He noted that Spurs’ players were dropping too deep and not showing for the ball:
“They’re marking themselves, they don’t want the ball,” Carragher noted.
That meant they were often forced to go long, and time and again Chelsea would win that 50-50 and come back at them. It was a classic example of a defensive setup backfiring because it didn’t give the team enough in advanced areas to get out of their own half regularly.
What he didn’t say, but what was obvious from the clip he showed, was the the reason Spurs were so cowardly in possession was that Chelsea were spooking them all game with their energetic and well co-ordinated pressing.
The opposition were getting hounded all over the pitch, with Moises Caicedo particularly voracious in his hunger to win the ball again and again. Chelsea had a great attitude right from the start, and it worked really well when contrasted with Spurs lack of belief.
You can see Carragher explain it all in the clip embedded here:

In other news…
Carragher also spoke about Chelsea’s work in possession, and he compared Enzo Maresca to some of the world’s best coaches when talking about the way he coached “rotations” for the Blues.
Cole Palmer has been named in this season’s FIFPro Men’s World XI after another exceptional year where he shone in particular at the Club World Cup. Now we just need back on this pitch for this season!
