“Football intelligence” – Chelsea wonderkid is like a Jorginho – Billy Gilmour hybrid

Chelsea head off to Azerbaijan to face Qarabag, and while we won’t know until tomorrow exactly who is travelling, there’s a strong suspicion that some key players will be rested for the long trip east.

That means space for youngsters, and one of the most likely to be involved is Reggie Walsh. He made his Champions League bow in the last round of fixtures when we faced Ajax, and will likely be on the bench tomorrow.

In an interview with the club website today, he outlined what he is all about:

“I’d say my biggest strengths are my football intelligence and my ability to receive the ball in tight spaces under pressure,” the teenager said.

“I’m always scanning and looking to play forward, breaking lines and progressing the play. Also, I think my decision-making is something I take pride in. It’s something I’ve worked hard on and I always try to keep it sharp and consistent, especially in high-pressure situations.”

That’s a pretty good description of him – he reminds us a little of Billy Gilmour both visually and in terms of style. Enzo Maresca has already said how much he likes Reggie, calling him a “perfect” midfielder for his system, and has shown he’s not just talking him up by using him in games.

Jamie Carragher was full of praise for Chelsea on Monday Night Football, starting off with a look at the way they had spooked Tottenham with their high pressing all over the pitch.
