Surprise Twist: Man United could send Lisandro Martinez away during crucial comeback phase

PL News Wednesday 5 November 2025 - 05:44

Manchester United star Lisandro Martínez is edging closer to a long-awaited return from injury and fans can finally start to get excited.

Martinez suffered a devastating anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury back in February against Crystal Palace, a moment that halted his season just as he was rediscovering his best form.

After months of intense rehabilitation and setbacks, Martinez is now back in full team training and steadily building his match sharpness.

According to the Daily Mail, the 27-year-old could join up with Argentina during the international break.

United feel Martinez’s recovery may be better served by training at a high level with Argentina than by staying at Carrington during the upcoming international break.

Many United players will be away on international duty, while the others will be having some time off and lighter workouts.

Head coach Ruben Amorim recently revealed that Martinez was desperate to feature against Nottingham Forest, but the manager wisely decided to delay his comeback to avoid any unnecessary risk.

Despite standing at just 5ft 9in, Martinez has never been intimidated by the Premier League’s physicality.

He has gone toe to toe with some of the division’s toughest forwards and often emerged as the winner.

United have sorely missed the aggression, leadership, and fearless mentality that the Argentine brings to their back line.

He is arguably the best ball-playing centre-back in England, and his return will instantly transform the team’s ability to build from the back with confidence.

He could also play vertical passes to release Bryan Mbeumo or Benjamin Sesko, a quality currently possessed only by Casemiro.

Spending time with the Argentina squad could give him one more week of intense, high-quality football training, a valuable step before his full return to competitive action.

However, both Martinez and United must proceed with extreme caution.

After enduring multiple injury setbacks over the past two years, the focus now must be on ensuring his body is fully ready before he steps back onto the pitch.

The Red Devils will clash with Tottenham Hotspur this weekend before heading into the November international break.

Amorim could give Martinez a few minutes off the bench.
