Geovany Quenda has come in for criticism from the Portuguese media following his performance for Sporting Lisbon against Juventus on Tuesday night.
Quenda will join Chelsea next summer after the Blues agreed a deal thought to be worth around £44m with the Portuguese giants.
The 18-year-old is regarded as one of the biggest talents in world football in his age group, and he’s set to go straight into the Chelsea first team squad next season.
Portuguese media criticise Geovany Quenda performance
Quenda was named in the starting line-up for the game against Juventus, which ended in a 1-1 draw in Turin and he’s put in some impressive performances in the Champions League this season.
Thierry Henry was full of praise for Quenda after he scored earlier this season in the competition, and he’s a key player for Sporting.
However, his performance on Tuesday night was a reminder he still has a lot to learn, and Portuguese outlet A Bola were critical and gave him a five out of ten.
“It wasn’t one of Quenda’s best nights, mainly due to his lack of defensive sharpness in supporting Vagiannidis and locking down the flank where Yildiz, Thuram, and Cambiaso were dominating,” they wrote.
“This resulted in the Italian goal and other headaches, which the youngster couldn’t compensate for in his attacking actions.”
Quenda has been in good form this season and has four goals and five assists to his name in 17 appearances in all competitions.
Fierce competition in the wide areas at Chelsea
Quenda will be under no illusion of the stiff competition for places in the wide areas at Stamford Bridge, with Chelsea well stocked.
The teenager will be competing on the right wing with the likes of fellow youngster Estevao, and the more established Pedro Neto.
It will be interesting to see if Chelsea sell one of their existing wingers next summer to make space for Quenda in the squad, or if they decide to go with five wingers.
