Roberto Olabe promises to fix Monchi’s wrongs in first words since joining Aston Villa

Roberto Olabe has insisted that Aston Villa will improve in the January transfer market.

Olabe officially joined the Villans in September, with the Spaniard reuniting with Unai Emery in the Midlands.

Monchi left his role as Aston Villa’s president of football operations after a difficult summer transfer window, where the Villans were working amid the context of PSR pressures.

Emery and Olabe previously worked together at Spanish side Almeria, while the latter earned a reputation for spotting burgeoning talent at Real Sociedad and will look to recreate that success at Villa Park.

Olabe has taken up Monchi‘s former role and, in his first words since joining the Villans, has promised to improve key areas in B6.

Roberto Olabe makes Aston Villa recruitment vow

Monchi’s record at overseeing transfers during his time at Villa was decidedly mixed, with the likes of Morgan Rogers, Youri Tielemans, Marcus Rashford, and Marco Asensio all signed on his watch.

However, some of the summer recruitment at Villa Park has come under fire with the likes of Evann Guessand and Harvey Elliott facing scrutiny early in their Villa careers – the latter seemingly out of favour with Emery.

However, thanks to Olabe’s long-standing relationship with the ex-Arsenal boss, there is hope that the two will combine their strengths effectively for Villa.

VillaTV released an interview with Olabe on Tuesday, and the 58-year-old outlined his vision for what he wants to achieve behind the scenes at Villa Park.

Olabe said: “My view will be open regarding the different areas. Structure and organisation will be commercial areas, communication, academy and women.

“If we have a market, we have an opportunity to be better; we will be better.”

Olabe wants to sign two Real Madrid stars

Preparation has started behind the scenes as Olabe is looking to strengthen Villa at the first opportunity he gets.

He will work not only with Emery but also with Villa’s director of football operations Damian Vidagany.

Olabe and the technical team have seemingly started working on transfers, as Aston Villa have been linked with Real Madrid forward Endrick.

Villa are also reportedinly interested in a move for Gonzalo Garcia, who is a young striker at Los Blancos.

The number nine position is clearly an area Olabe has identified to improve, as the Spaniard looks to put his own stamp on his role.
