Joe Cole says this Chelsea player would be first name on the teamsheet ahead of Cole Palmer

After a heroic performance against Spurs on Saturday, Moises Caicedo has been getting praised to high heavens all week.

Joe Cole was on TalkSport this morning speaking about the midfielder and his impact at Stamford Bridge.

“Moises Caicedo? I remember watching him at Brighton and I thought to myself, ‘Between the two boxes, I think he’s the best midfielder in the world’,” the former Blues winger said.

“In the modern game, when so much of it’s about patterns of play and winning yardage, breaking the lines, he’s the best at that.”

“Breaking up play, he’s got great technique and I thought, ‘But can he score goals?’ And now he’s adding goals into his game. Also, at the other end of the pitch, he’s becoming more of a leader. I think he’s the most important player at Chelsea in terms of, if we had a cup final tomorrow, I’d want his name on the teamsheet before anyone else. I think he’s brilliant, and that £100million now is looking like a snip.”

It’s high praise to say a player in the same team as Cole Palmer could be the first name on the teamsheet ahead of the England star – but there’s some logic to it. As brilliant as Palmer is, it feels like the team can survive without him better than they could without Caicedo.

In other news…

Chelsea will try to win a game without Caicedo tonight when they take on Qarabag in the Champions League. Trevoh Chalobah says they’ve got to enjoy these moments.

Yan Diomande is an exciting rising star in Europe who Chelsea are apparently keen on. The 18 year old is tearing things up for RB Leipzig, and if he keeps playing like this there’s going to be a major bidding war for him in the summer.
