After such a promising first few weeks, things couldn’t have gone much more wrong for Liam Delap at Chelsea.
The Blues signed him for what looked a bargain fee in the summer, getting the deal done nice and early so he could go and join up with the team at the Club World Cup, where he impressed.
Then heading off on holidays, everything looked set for him to make a major impact this season. But since then, it’s all gone wrong. He got a bad hamstring injury in August and on his return last week got a red card with 25 minutes.
The comeback starts here for Delap
The comeback starts here, with a team in desperate need of a striker to come in and score some goals, as well as to allow Joao Pedro to play in a deeper role. Delap has a lot of making up to do, but the stage is set for him to do it.
The Evening Standard have a piece about Delap and what he can do for this team, noting his strongest performance came in the game against Esperance de Tunis where he scored his only competitive goal so far:
“At his best, he drives down avenues with the ball, draws defenders away from other Chelsea playmakers, uses his physicality to hold the ball up, lays it off and drops deep to receive and spread wide.”
Sounds good to us…
In other news…
Our predicted XI for tonight has Delap in the mix, but likely to only play 45 to 60 minutes as he builds up his fitness again. He will be desperate to make the most of it.
Alejandro Garnacho will likely be rested tonight, but he’s overall made a good impression on Enzo Maresca. The competition for minutes is increasing, however, as injured players return.
