Louie Barry has been struggling in his latest loan spell away from Aston Villa.
The Villa Park starlet has had several stints away from his parent club in recent years, and he is currently spending the 2025-26 campaign at Sheffield United.
Barry was heavily linked with a permanent Aston Villa exit in the summer, with bitter rivals Birmingham City even emerging as a potential destination at one stage.
The B6 outfit kept hold of the forward for the long term, but they will be hugely concerned with how his current loan spell is progressing at Bramall Lane.
Lee Hendrie thinks Aston Villa may recall Louie Barry in January
Aston Villa will be keeping a close eye on Barry during his time in South Yorkshire, but they will not be pleased with what they have seen from him so far.
The 22-year-old featured in the opening nine league games for the Blades, but he has since been left out of the last two matchday squads altogether and has been playing for the youth team.
The former Barcelona academy graduate was brought into the club by previous boss Ruben Selles, and he has massively fallen out of favour since Chris Wilder’s return.
Ex-Aston Villa hero Lee Hendrie has now revealed that his former club may look to recall Barry in January, and also shared a private conversation that he recently had with the youngster.
“Barry’s situation is a problem,” the former midfielder told Football League World.
“Selles brought him to Sheffield United and wanted to play a certain way. I’m not saying he can’t play under Wilder, but it doesn’t seem to be working quite as planned.
“I spoke to him briefly at the start of the season. He was excited and upbeat about going there. I think a lot of things have gone against Louie, but the club didn’t start as they should’ve.
“It might be that Villa recall him, it might not suit his way or style. It’s looking that way because he hasn’t played much since Wilder came back.

“This is the good thing about having loan spells. You can go out, and if it doesn’t work, you come back and go somewhere else in January, and I know a number of clubs would certainly be interested in him.”
Villa have outgrown Louie Barry
Aston Villa came extremely close to selling Barry to Hull City during the summer transfer window, and they may well be tempted to try and move him on again in January, given the lack of success in his current loan spell.
- Barry hit 15 goals from 23 games for Stockport County in League One back in 2024-25
- He then moved up to the Championship with Hull but was hampered by injuries
- Barry agreed to join Hull in the summer but they ultimately couldn’t pay the £3.5million fee
The second city outfit have progressed dramatically as a club in recent years, to the point where anything other than qualification for European football would be seen as a big failure.
Considering that Barry is now 22 and still at the stage where he is yet to truly prove himself at Championship level, now might be the right time for Villa to finally turn their back on him.
Barry has long since been earmarked as a prodigy with a huge future ahead of him, but his struggles in the last few years may have dismissed his opportunity at Villa for good.
