Reece James was pretty disappointed by Chelsea’s draw with Qarabag last night, as you’d expect. The defender was part of a strong team which started the game but couldn’t get a vital 3 points in the league phase.
Chelsea “didn’t do enough” but “amazing player” impressed anyway
To make matters worse, the Blues were actually ahead in the game until a couple of mistakes at the back undid them.
“The momentum changed with their goal and simply, we didn’t do enough. We had chances towards the end to win the game, but we didn’t take them and we only have ourselves to blame in not taking all three points,” the captain said post game.
But it wasn’t all bad – James had the chance to praise a player who opened the scoring and continues to look like a rising star unlike almost anything we’ve ever seen at Chelsea:
“Estevao is an amazing player and he has the world at his feet,” James said of the teenage Brazilian.
“He’s still so young and it’s on us to keep him grounded, protect him and make sure he stays healthy. He’s got a lot of development still to come but we’re super happy with his performances and to have him here with us.”
There are demands to start Estevao on Saturday against Wolves, and while we don’t think Enzo Maresca will go for that, his time is surely coming.

In other news…
James had already mentioned “one thing” he thought his team needed to improve as this season starts to take shape with some familiar patterns in place.
Qarabag goalscorer Leandro Andrade also had his say on the game when he spoke to the media post game.
