After a relatively barren spell by his previous standards, Viktor Gyokeres was back on the scoresheet this evening, scoring twice in the second half in Arsenal’s 4-0 win over Atletico Madrid.
The Swedish striker hadn’t found the net since September 13th, and while his goals weren’t necessarily beautiful, they all count, and according to Mikel Arteta they’re a reward for what he brings to the team with his workrate.
Speaking afterwards, the Arsenal boss said, “Viktor, I mean, the work that he does for us, he brings a different dimension to the front line. He opens up so much spaces.
“And today you can see his reaction, the reaction of his teammates, how happy everybody is for his goals.
“The work rate and everything that he brings to the team is outstanding and he fully deserves it.”
Speaking about the challenge his side faced this evening, against a side that is typically very hard to break down, Arteta continued, “They are team that is very difficult to open up and create open chances. I think we did that certainly in the first half, but we didn’t take them.
“And then you can feel the level of threat that they have every time you give the ball away in dangerous areas.
“But I think the second half we started really brave again, ruling the front foot. We opened the game with a set piece again and after that with more space as well, we found different ways in a really, I think, dominant way to win the game.”
The win makes it three from three in the Champions League this season, and three clean sheets in the process too.
