Enzo Maresca made ten changes for last night’s game, continuing last season’s Conference League policy of full rotation where possible.
He won’t be able to get away with that many changes in some games, but he’s taking the chance to rotate while he can. Next week’s game against Wolves in the EFL Cup offers another good chance.
Hato impresses against former team
Second string players are always keen to take a chance to impress in these games, and last night it was Jorrel Hato who did well against his old team. To be fair, it was set up nicely for him given the opposition were down to ten, but he still did really well and the stats bear that out.
He’s got a lot to learn in the Premier League, especially physically (even by his own admission), but up against his old teammates he had no problem. His duels numbers were very impressive. No Chelsea player won more – Hato succeeded in 3 of his 6 ground duels and 4 of his 5 aerial duels according to Fotmob, who gave him an impressive final score of 7.7.
He made 3 tackles, 6 clearances and 3 recoveries. One notable moment saw the Dutch side break on the counter from a set piece, and Hato being the man who got across to cover with a sliding tackle that earned him big applause from the Stamford Bridge crowd.
He’s done his chances of playing more in the future no harm, and will get a chance against Premier League opposition next week when we play Wolves in the EFL Cup.
In other news…
Estevao Willian also impressed last night, racking up some crazy attacking numbers against a ten man Ajax team who just didn’t want to be there and breaking a season record in the Champions League.
