Chelsea got past Ajax with ease last night in the Champions League, but there are tougher tests ahead.
When we faced Bayern Munich in the first game of the group stage we were made to look as raw and inexperienced as we are, and we’ll have to get a lot better if we want to compete to actually win this trophy.
Chelsea still being linked with Champions League quality defender
One thing we could do is sign a player from a team like Bayern to improve us in terms of quality and experience. Defender Dayot Upamecano continues to be linked with a Premier League move, and Chelsea are finding their name put into the mix.
TeamTalk today translate reports from Germany which claim that the Blues, along with Liverpool and Inter Milan, want the defender next summer. He will be available on a free transfer if he doesn’t agree a new deal with the German giants.
At this stage, we don’t expect that to happen. He’s far more likely to wait until he’s a free agent and see what offers are on the table. That gives us a chance – but also means we’d have to compete with the salaries being offered by some of these European giants.
That could be tricky – but if we’re looking to part ways with someone like Trevoh Chalobah, Upamecano is an obvious replacement.
In other news…
Jamie Gittens was a menace on the flank last night, and after the game he admitted that it has been a struggle getting up to speed at Chelsea, but he finally thinks he’s getting there.
Meanwhile Jorrel Hato has admitted he’s taking a while to get up to speed physically in the Premier League, but last night he also impressed against Ajax, where he was dominant at the back.
