View: I think 0% summer signing could be done at Aston Villa after Go Ahead Eagles clash

PL News Thursday 23 October 2025 - 14:42

I have been genuinely surprised by Harvey Elliott’s lack of impact at Aston Villa.

Elliott signed for Villa on loan from Liverpool and was seen as the signing that Villa Park had been in desperate need of all summer.

Unai Emery needed creativity in his squad, and Elliott’s addition at Villa, with an obligation to buy, looked destined to help turn the tide.

That isn’t how it has gone down, as Emi Buendia has stepped up for Villa and has become a key asset in claret and blue this campaign.

The Villans have been shocked by how little they’ve seen of Elliott, and I believe the Europa League clash against Go Ahead Eagles could prove to be make-or-break.

Harvey Elliott has been let down at Aston Villa

Elliott has come under fire at Villa already, but in fairness, I don’t think he’s been given a fair chance to showcase his talents.

The majority of the fanbase in B6 and I were delighted to see the attacking midfielder come in, but for whatever reason, it hasn’t worked out yet.

The 22-year-old has only been afforded 97 minutes in the Premier League, which is an unfair period to truly judge a signing.

Only Jadon Sancho and Victor Lindelof have played fewer minutes as senior players in the Villa squad, summing up the lack of impact from the summer signings.

I think there was less expectation placed on this duo’s shoulders, so there is still frustration and disappointment surrounding Elliott.

Villa’s number nine has played just four Europa League minutes this season, and I believe he needs that to change against Go Ahead Eagles.

I want to see Elliott perform at a better level

The England under-21 international was electric over the summer, and I was surprised and impressed by just how good he was at the EUROs.

Five goals in six appearances was a hugely positive record and should have stood him in good stead to hit the ground running at Villa Park.

That hasn’t been the case, and in his only Premier League start for Villa, I was left questioning why we were so excited to sign him in the first place.

Elliott was hooked at half-time against Fulham after touching the ball just 24 times and maintaining a zero per cent shot accuracy.

Just one of his passes made its way into the final third, showing the lack of threat from his other 16 completed balls.

The ex-Fulham youngster was then replaced by Buendia, who went on to score and assist as he confirmed three points for the home side.

Elliott has to reach that level, and it could be the perfect chance to do so against Go Ahead Eagles.

Elliott has to perform if given the chance vs Go Ahead Eagles

I think that Emery has to throw the summer signing in against the Dutch outfit and see what he can do.

It hasn’t been an ideal start for the attacker, but that hasn’t totally been down to his own form after such a lack of opportunity.

He can’t afford not to hit the heights if he is given the chance in the Europa League.

If he doesn’t, I honestly believe it could be the end of the road for Elliott at Villa Park, especially with his obligation to buy being game-based.

Reports suggest that 10 appearances could trigger a permanent clause, and right now, I think spending on the 22-year-old would be hugely unwise.
