According to The Athletic, Max Dowman has turned down interest from elsewhere to agree scholarship terms with Arsenal – a deal that will eventually lead to a professional contract when he turns 17.
Recognising his prodigious talent, the club has been carefully integrating the 15-year-old midfielder into first-team plans over the past 18 months.
Dowman trained regularly with Mikel Arteta’s squad last season and likely would have made his debut had he not been just 14 when the campaign began, an age that made him ineligible under Premier League rules.
He was included in the pre-season tour of Asia, catching the eye with several lively cameos, winning a penalty against Newcastle, repeating the feat against Villarreal at the Emirates, and drawing yet another foul in the box when making his debut off the bench against Leeds. Since then, he’s also featured against Liverpool and Port Vale.
His teammates speak glowingly of him, particularly Declan Rice, who has taken him under his wing, and with scouts now monitoring his performances for both England under-19s and Arsenal’s under-21s, the secret’s well and truly out – the Gunners have a serious talent on their hands.
Credit to Andrea Berta and Mikel Arteta, who’ve moved quickly to secure his long-term commitment to the club.
As a scholar, he won’t actually earn that much – in the Premier League, they are paid approximately £480 a month in the first year and £520 a month in the second year.
However, when pro terms are put on the table, he’s sure to be one of the highest-earning teenagers in England.
Dowman turns 16 on 31st December (insert THE joke here), so we can expect confirmation of the scholarship deal in January.
