Manchester United were linked with VfB Stuttgart midfielder Angelo Stiller last summer and reportedly sent a delegate to Germany to complete a deal for him.
The report turned out to be false, although the club held discussions ‘internally‘ about the possibility of signing him.
With the January transfer window not far away, United continue to be mentioned as one of Stiller’s suitors.
However, journalist Ben Jacobs believes United are not plotting a move for the German in January but could do so next summer.
He told The United Stand: “I’m not expecting anything in January for Stiller and Manchester United. Nor do I think that any talks of note have really started in the build-up to the winter window opening.
“But in the summer one to keep an eye on, much more affordable than a player like Carlos Baleba, much more gettable, maybe because of the release clause or simply the price being lower than someone like Adam Wharton who Manchester United really like.
“Elliot Anderson is obviously there on the radar, we can speak about him but not something to watch out for in January.
“So Stiller’s release clause is kind of his market value. He’s open to the Premier League, and I think that is going to be a story to watch between Stiller and Manchester United.”
Stuttgart value Stiller internally at €50m (£43m) but he has a €40m (£35m) release clause in his contract – which the German club can eliminate by paying him €2m (£1.7m).
The 24-year-old was named in The Athletic’s 2023/24 Bundesliga of the Season and continued his impressive form last term, helping Frankfurt win the DFB-Pokal.
Stiller is not as strong as Baleba in duels but can dictate the tempo of a game, drawing comparisons with Bayern Munich star Joshua Kimmich.
He ranks in the 93rd percentile for forward passes, 88th percentile for progressive passe, 84th percentile for forward pass and 81st percentile for key passes in the Bundesliga this term.
Stiller would help Man United become a more dominant side if a deal could be agreed with Stuttgart.
