Marc Guiu had a lot of headlines this week, and he got the start many predicted when Chelsea took on Sunderland yesterday.
Guiu disappoints in his big moment
It didn’t go well, and the ratings online reflect that.
The Sun gave the striker a 4/10 for his performance:
“Utterly relentless in his pressing of the club at which he spent just 26 days, and at times his hold-up play was effective. Unfortunately, that was about all he offered Enzo Maresca’s side on his first start of the season. Largely dominated by Dan Ballard at the back for the Mackems.”
The Evening Standard gave him a 4 as well:
“Plenty of energy but not a lot of finesse from the young Spaniard on his first Premier League start. Struggled to get into the game after the break and took just 10 touches in total before being replaced by Jamie Gittens. This performance was a reminder of his inexperience.”
Sports Illustrated was a little more generous with a 5.9:
“Started against the club he briefly represented on loan this season aiming to build on his midweek goal against Ajax, but he was pretty much anonymous throughout the clash. Surprising he lasted so long before being substituted.”
What do we think? We heard a lot about how Guiu playing ahead of Joao Pedro would unlock the Brazilian, but it was perhaps his worst game for the club. Running around a lot is not enough to be in the team, and we want someone better in there next time.
In other news…
Trevoh Chalobah tried to explain the defeat, but came up with nothing. He concedes that fatigue is no excuse, and that Chelsea didn’t create enough.
Enzo Maresca is not free of blame either – his decision to take off Josh Acheampong was questioned in the moment, and ended up contributing to the defeat.
