Igor Tudor has been sacked by Juventus this morning, leaving a very interesting vacancy at the top of European football.
Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca has been linked repeatedly with the job back in his native Italy, although it’s always seemed to be a case of people putting two and two together rather than any concrete links.
Chelsea and Juventus could come to agreement over Maresca future
We have said many times that Chelsea won’t sack Maresca unless they’re mathematically out of the Champions League picture. So we expect Juve to appoint a new coach and Chelsea to keep on with Maresca.
But it’s not impossible that something happens if there is a wave of doubt about the Italian coach behind the scenes.
It could end up a little like the situation with Maurizio Sarri – who also happened to go to Juventus. He had not done badly but it was pretty clear when Juventus came calling that he was keen to go, and that Chelsea were happy to let him go.
Both parties were pretty pleased with the deal that meant they avoided paying large compensation, and everyone got the outcome they wanted. We don’t forsee anything similar here, Maresca is regarded more highly by these owners than Sarri was back in 2018. But if things continue to trend badly at Chelsea and Juventus appoint a short term option until the end of the season (Claudio Ranieri?), it certainly feels possible that a Sarri-like situation develops at the end of the season.
In other news…
Chelsea will play the tenth game of their Premier League season on Sunday when they take on Spurs – and it’s not looking pretty. Things are trending in the wrong direction for Enzo Maresca’s team, looking at the stats.
Mamadou Sarr was in action on Sunday night as Strasbourg took on Lyon. He did well but in the end they were beaten. We’re not sure he’s the solution to our defensive problems just yet. He has similar flaws to the options we already have there.
