Ex-Aston Villa employee: Int'l star's new deal to be his last at Villa Park, agreement is close

PL News Monday 27 October 2025 - 16:28

John McGinn has played a central role in the recent improvement at Aston Villa.

The Villans failed to find the back of the net during their opening four Premier League games this term, but now find themselves on a run of four consecutive wins in league action.

McGinn was excellent for Aston Villa in their win over Manchester City this weekend, and he also netted a crucial goal in the victory against Fulham in the opening game of that four-match spell.

The Scotland international has been as important as ever for Unai Emery and Co. so far this season, and that has prompted speculation surrounding a new contract in recent weeks.

John McGinn deal to follow Matty Cash contract extension

McGinn is closing in on a new Aston Villa contract, with John Percy recently reporting that talks are advanced between him and the club, with an agreement set to be reached.

Contract extensions have been the order of the day in B6 of late, with Matty Cash putting pen to paper on a new deal lasting until 2029.

McGinn could become the next star to extend his stay at Villa Park, with his current agreement having just over 18 months left to run.

However, ex-Villa scout Bryan King – speaking exclusively to Villa News – believes that it is likely to be the final contract that the 31-year-old receives in the second city.

“I think this will be McGinn’s last deal,” King said.

“But he’s proved with the way that he’s played that he’s worth an extension. I think his experience is important. He seems to be happy at Villa, and he’s proved a few people wrong with the way that he’s approached this season.

“He’s not been made club captain just for him to leave during the season. He’s going to be there and has rightly earned a new contract with his performances.”

Aston Villa have played their contract situations off perfectly

Aston Villa are also working on extending Morgan Rogers’ contract, and the recent flurry of activity has been perfectly timed after the summer transfer window passed without any major exits.

The Villans were continually linked with sales of their key players in order to address their PSR concerns, but they were ultimately able to survive without any significant casualties, and they are reaping the benefits of their patience at the moment.

The likes of Cash and McGinn are invaluable members of the squad, but if they can tie down the jewel in their crown in Rogers for another few years, then it would be a real statement of intent for them.

Everybody expected Villa to lose the key components of their team in the summer, but now it looks as though the exact opposite could be about to happen.
